Positron Emission Mammography (PEM)
White Plains Radiology Associates has the only Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) unit in Westchester County, which is an optimized PET scanner dedicated and designed to provide unprecedented metabolic visualization of abnormal tissue of the breast. NAVISCAN, the manufacturer, has designed a unique scanner that through gentle immobilization and advanced photonics, can visualize lesions as small as 2 mm. The scanning procedure acquires the data with significantly less discomfort than a mammogram since the breast is immobilized rather than compressed between two plates.
Studies have shown that both the sensitivity and specificity of the scanner exceeds 90%. PEM may be ideal for women diagnosed with breast cancer to accurately stage lesions and plan surgeries, help medical oncologists with radiation or chemotherapy treatment, and monitoring the local recurrence of breast disease.
